It is hard to tell just what drives people to harm innocent animals. â€Å"According to a 1997 study done by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Northeastern University, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse,† says Pet-abuse. om. It is vital to report people who hurt animals. Most animal abusers find some sort of fulfillment or power in torturing a victim they know cant fight back, which is why crimes like rape and child molestation are committed. While not all animal abusers become serial killers or rapists, it is important to take every case seriously. For example, Carroll Edward Cole was a West Coast serial killer who may have murdered as many as 35 women in the 1970s and was executed in 1985. Based on Coles testimony, his first violent act was strangling a puppy. The Columbine school shooting is another example of animal abuse as a precursor to human violence. Before killing 12 classmates and then turning the guns on themselves, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebod had bragged to friends about mutilating animals. If these acts had been reported to authorities and taken seriously, these two young men might have been put in a proper facility and helped, possibly avoiding the horrific massacre. Given these examples, its hard to imagine why all states dont take animal cruelty seriously. Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, North Dakota, and South Dakota have no felony provisions for cruelty to animals. According to the Humane Society, a good felony anticruelty law should protect all animals, apply to first-time offenders, carry large fines and lengthy prison time, have no exemptions, require convicted abusers to get counseling at their own expense, and prohibit abusers from owning or living among animals. Along with these laws we need officials who will strongly enforce them. Police, psychologists, and even the FBI recognize the link between animal cruelty and violence against people. To better protect communities, all states should institute strong penalties and work to increase public awareness of these crimes. Its not only up to the legal system to ensure that communities across the country are aware and educated about animal cruelty. There are plenty of things everyday citizens can do. The simplest action is for people to take care of their own pets and learn the facts so they can educate others on proper animal care. Another easy way to help is by donating to or volunteering at a local animal shelter. Contrary to popular belief, volunteering doesnt require a lot of time; simply going in a few hours a week helps tremendously. Finally, by writing letters you can remind your local lawmakers that animal abuse is a real problem that needs to be addressed. Taking a few minutes to support this worthy cause not only helps animals, it allows you to feel proud about standing up for something so important to society. It is our job to be the voice for creatures who cannot speak up for themselves. As a nation we need to make it our priority to come together and ensure the safety of our beloved pets. Though it has been proven that the main reason of rebellion was the grievances many people had of the church. However, there were ulterior motives, and underlying causes to the start of the Reformation. Religion was always ?used? as a driving force for many of the ideas for reform in the 16th century. However, with other revolutions in history, one main the main causes happened to be monetary. Reformers and rulers alike thought it was a disgrace to see that the Reformation was based so heavily on money. There was a sort of economic depression in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many people were forced to borrow money through loans. One was the Dominican Friar who borrowed money from the Fruggers of Germany. To pay off the loan, he started to sell indulgences. Indulgences became widely popular. It was even exaggerated to the point where it was ridiculed (Document I). On the other hand, the German princes disagreed. As a whole, they stated that the money they donated to the church to help the people, where ?somehow? used to make the pastors richer (Document D). The German Princes saw it as a shame that the pastors pretended to be followers, only to elevate their financial status. Politics also played a role in the development of the Protestant Reformation. At the head of the Roman Catholic Church, stood the pope. The pope was supposed to be a divine figure. He was supposed to stand at the head, and be as pure as any man can be. At that time, it was almost never the case. The Pope had absolute authority when it came to making laws, and practices that were to be followed in the church. However, he wasn't the emperor of the religion. The Pope didn't make up the religion, and thus should not have absolute power, or so Martin Luther believed (Document G). It was like the Pope was abusing their power, or at least lost their way as religious officials. In fact it was perceived that the Pope, and other officials were ?fake' Christians: those of which who did nothing for the religion (Document E). In some cases, it went as far as the Pope mistreating his subjects. The Pope had the power (or used power in his favor) to change laws to his liking. The Pope would literary do anything to avoid be convicted of heresy, even if that meant going against the laws of Christ (Bible) (Document B). The last of the major causes was social. Even though the Pope abused his power, nevertheless he wasn't the only one. Even common people abuse their rights as a society. Many had thought that the populace of the 15th and 16th centuries distorted the laws themselves to suit their needs (Document F). In a way the people was taking advantage of God, and that is one of the most deadly sins a human can commit. While that was going on, people like Martin Luther, would try to find someway to defend the Church and their actions, ending up finding more fault in them (Document A). As Martin Luther found so many things wrong with the Church, he decided to break away, thus starting Lutherism. Lutherism led into the most dynamic part of the Reformation. My mind wandered back to the world of tranquillity and peace where I had previously been, urging me to stay there forever. I could feel the warmth of the sun glaring on my face. English Surnames Meanings and Origins

English surnames as we know them today -- family names passed down intact from father to son to grandson -- werent widely used until after the Norman conquest of 1066. Prior to that time there just werent enough people to really make it necessary to use anything other than a single name. As the countrys population grew, however, people began tacking on descriptions such as John the Baker or Thomas, son of Richard to distinguish between men (and women) of the same name. These descriptive names eventually became associated with a family, inherited, or passed down, from one generation to the next.   While they came into use in the eleventh century, hereditary surnames were not commonplace in England prior to the era of the sixteenth-century Reformation. It is likely that the introduction of parish registers in 1538 played a role in the use of surnames, as a person entered under one surname at baptism would not be likely to be married under another name, and buried under a third. Some areas of England came later to the use of surnames, however. It was not until the late seventeenth century that many families in Yorkshire and Halifax took permanent surnames. Surnames in England generally developed from four major sources. Patronymic and Matronymic Surnames These are surnames derived from baptismal or Christian names to indicate family relationship or descent—patronymic derived from the fathers given name and matronymic, meaning derived from the mothers name. Some baptismal or given names have become surnames without any change in form (a son took his fathers given name as his surname). Others added an ending such as  -s (more common in the South and West of England) or -son (preferred in the northern half of England) to his fathers name. The latter -son suffix was also sometimes added to the mothers name. English surnames ending in -ing (from the British engi, to bring forth, and -kin generally indicate a patronymic or family name as well. Example: Casey Anthony Murder Case Casey Anthony was charged with first-degree murder of her daughter. During her trial, her attorney tried to get statements that she made to family members, friends, and the police, suppressed because she had not been read her Miranda rights before making the statements.  The judge denied the motion to suppress the evidence, stating that at the time of the statements, Anthony was not a suspect.   You have the right to remain silent. Take this sentence at face value. It means that you can remain silent when police question you. It is your right, and if you ask any good attorney, they will recommend that you use it- and remain silent. However, you are required to state honestly, your name, address, and whatever other information is required by state law. Anything you do say may be used against you in a court of law. This goes back to the first line of the Miranda warning and why you want to use it. This line explains that if you do start talking, anything you say will (not can) likely be used against you when it is time to go to court. You have the right to an attorney. If you are being questioned by the police, or even before questioning, you have the right to request an attorney be present before you make any statements. But you must clearly say the words, that you want an attorney and that you will remain silent until you get one. Saying, I think I need an attorney, or I heard I should get an attorney, is not clearing defining your position. Once you state that you want an attorney present, all questioning has to stop until your attorney arrives.  Also, once you clearly state that you want an attorney, stop talking. Do not discuss the situation, or even participate in idle chit-chat, otherwise, it could be interpreted as you have willingly revoked (cancelled) your request to have an attorney present. It is like opening the proverbial can of worms. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. If you cannot afford an attorney, an attorney will be appointed to you. If you have requested an attorney, it is also important to be patient. It may take some time to get an attorney for you, but one will come. What if you wave your right to have an attorney present? It is your right to wave the right to have an attorney present during police questioning. It is also your right to change your mind. All that is required is that at any point, before, during or after an interrogation, that you state clearly that you want an attorney and will not answer questions until one is present. At whatever point that you say it, questioning should stop until your attorney arrives. However,  anything that you said before the request can be used against you in court. Exceptions to the Miranda Rule There are three situations when there may be exceptions to the ruling: When the police ask you to provide information such as your name, address, age, date of birth, and employment, you are required to answer those types of questions honestly.When it is considered a matter of public safety or when the public could face imminent danger, a suspect may still be questioned by police, even when they have invoked their right to remain silent.  If a suspect talks to a jailhouse snitch, their statements can be used against them in a court of law, even if they have not yet been Mirandized.
